TREE TRIMMING

Tree trimming, also known as tree pruning, is essential for the health and safety of your trees and the surrounding areas. When tree trimming is performed properly, there are advantages such as: risk reduction, more clearance, structural, view and aesthetic improvements, restoration and overall tree health that benefits both the tree and property surrounding the tree.

At Summit Tree Service, Inc., our ISA Trained Arborists will create a detailed plan to trim your trees correctly by first evaluating the species, growth cycles, structure and then the arborist will determine the extent of pruning to be done. The amount of trimming a tree needs is a critical step in tree pruning. We will then outline the trimming a tree will need in order to keep the tree healthy and the property surrounding the tree safe from potential destruction.

There are several different types of tree trimming / pruning that we will be able to recommend:
• Cleaning: to trim, prune and remove dead, diseased or otherwise non-beneficial branches of the tree.
• Raising: tree trimming that involves pruning the bottom of the crown area in order to provide more vertical clearance.
• Reduction: tree pruning that decreases the height or spread of tree growth.
• Thinning: selective tree trimming that reduces the density of live tree branches.
• Structural Pruning: this type of tree trimming is selected in order to improve tree branch architecture.
• Restoration: selective tree trimming that occurs for damaged trees in order to help the tree redevelop structure.
• Vista / View Pruning: a variety of tree trimming methods are used for this type or pruning in order to obtain or maximize a specific line of sight for optimum views from your property.
• We are often asked “when” is the best or proper time to trim or prune trees. Fruit Trees and American Elms should be only trimmed or pruned during winter months (when they are not producing fruit nor blooming). Any other type of tree may be trimmed or pruned any time of the year.
• As a general rule, trimming / pruning should not remove more than 25% of the foliage in any single trimming. Juvenile trees should be trimmed / pruned in a 2 – 3 year cycle, while mature trees in a 4 – 5 year cycle
