STUMP GRINDING

After a tree has been removed, you are left with several options. First, we can and do cut the stump as low to the ground as possible…..typically, within an inch or two above surrounding terrain level.

Otherwise, we can “grind” the stump down to substantially below surface level using specialty equipment, notably “tracked” purpose-built stump grinders. At a minimum, stumps should be ground at least 6” below the surface for new growth (such as new turf / grass) to have any chance at growing successfully. At Summit Tree Service, Inc., we believe it should be deeper than that. We grind to a minimum depth of 8” and depending on which machine we use, typically 10” – 14” below surface level.

This process can take hours, depending on the diameter of the stump itself and more importantly, the size and spread of the root ball. We use state of the art equipment and industry best practices to minimize flying debris (small stones or chunks of wood) by erecting stump grinding debris barriers before the grinding process begins.

Upon completion, we remove all unwanted debris and tamp down the earthen material plowed back into the hole, to best prepare the area for new planting and growth. Finally, we will fully rake and blow the area clean, as if we were never even there (other than the fresh earth where the stump used to be).
